1.25" flared canon muzzle, nominally .75" bore, 14.5" three-stage wedge-retained brass barrel with baluster turned rings at transitions, no S/N. Brass barrel and furniture, iron lock, walnut stock. 5.75" lock with integral, rounded, fenced and bridled pan and rounded swan-neck cock. Lock marked HUDSON forward of cock and under pan. Barrel with London commercial proof marks and engraved beaded band at breech. 12" snap bayonet mounted on top of barrel. 5.625" flat, two-screw brass side plate with simple engraving, triggergard with simple engraved acorn finial, similar simple patterns engraved on the brass buttplate tang as well. Brass wrist escutcheon is not engraved with initials or coat of arms. Simple raised apron carved around the breech plug tang. Wood ramrod with brass disc at tip, measures only 12" and is likely an old, too short for service, replacement.

Several gunmakers with the surname "Hudson" are listed in Blackmore who worked during the period that this gun was likely produced, circa 3rd-4th quarter of the 18th century, but the most likely maker appears to be Thomas Hudson (2), son of Thomas Hudson (1), who was active in London 1769-1782.

Condition: Good. The brass has a lovely mellow patina throughout. Lock shows some light pitting and erosion, but remains in original flint and is fully functional. Bore is very good with scattered oxidation. Snap bayonet remains functional but the spring is weak and the bayonet must be manually locked in place as spring tension will not fully extend it. Stock worn with numerous repaired cracks in the forend, running diagonally from the front of the lock mortise and  counterpane to the entry pipe, traveling through the rear barrel wedge. Stock with numerous scattered scuffs, dings and surface mars as well.

EST $1500 - 3000
