Antique Heavy Barrel American Fullstock Percussion Plains Rifle, by Valentine Gahr of Scioto, Ohio, NVSN, .44 cal., 39'' octagonal barrel marked ''V. Gahr'' on top flat ahead of breech, mounted with a dovetailed German silver blade front sight and a buckhorn-type open rear sight; flush-mounted lockplate with feather-motif hand engraving; double set triggers; brass furniture including small wing-shaped sideplate, scrolled triggerguard with finger rest, crescent buttplate with long lower tang, two under-barrel ramrod ferrules, and nosecap; artificially striped varnished maple stock with raised carved cheekpiece, and hardwood ramrod. Mfg'd 1850s-60s. Condition is fair to good. Barrel shows traces of blue, pitting at breech, and otherwise a smooth blue-brown patina to iron parts; brass with age patina. Stock is sound showing nicks and scratches from age and use, a 1'' crack at front of lockplate and another behind the nosecap (which has damage to right side) but is overall smooth with much artificial striping remaining. Lacks the percussion hammer; thus the action and triggers could not be ascertained due to missing hammer; bore is clean with sharp rifling. This is the type of heavy, stout and plain rifle that was built in the mid-19th century to satisfy the demands of westward-moving plainsmen and hunters. Its fullstock configuration makes it unusual, desirable and worthy of minor restoration; guns by this maker are rare. Est.: $500-$750. (Antique)
