This is the most elaborate cane gun we have encounterd. First off, it comes in its original oak case with the London dealer trade label inside lid and the dividers are covered in green felt. The main components are the two piece staff with handle and the air chamber. The metal staff is finished in durable high gloss black lacquer. The tip is brass and the cane is assembled by screwing it together near the center. The separate air chamber is loaded, then inserted into the staff before the cane is put back together. The handle appears to be horn. The air tube is twist steel with brass hardware. The caliber is .32 and it shoots a lead ball just like a period cap and ball revolver. We cannot find any maker name on the cane itself so the case just might be the dealer case and not the maker of the cane. As to condition, the staff has been repainted black. The exposed section where unscrewed is case color. Each of these three large sections of the cane gun fit into slots in the case much like a break down billiard cue only smaller. Inside the case are two tools needed for loading as well as an unmarked single cavity .32 bore bullet mold. The English oak case has a newer applied brass plaque that reads 'E.M.Reilly Air Cane, London England .32 cal. 1850. " The E.M. Reilly company was a well known London company known mostly for the high quality double barrel shotguns, even winning a prize in 1869 at the Paris Exposition. A truly rare item. (a)
