.45 Colt Automatic Rimless Smokeless, 5" barrel, S/N 4569 (mfg. ca 1910). Commercial high polish blued finish with fire blued small parts and color case hardened hammer, checkered walnut grips. Single action semi-automatic pistol. Left side of slide with second type markings in two lines: PATENTED / APR. 20, 1897 SEPT. 9, 1902 DEC. 12, 1905 and COLT'S PT. F. A. CO. / HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A. The Rampant Colt in a circle trademark is clearly stamped to the rear of the left side of the slide. Colt's "verified proof" VP in an inverted triangle is stamped on the forward left side of the triggerguard bow, with the serial number clearly stamped on the frame above it. A small "W" inspection mark is present on the lower left of the guard bow as well. The right side of the slide is clearly marked in two lines: AUTOMATIC  COLT / CALIBRE 45 RIMLESS SMOKELESS. Correct spurred hammer for this serial number range. Drift adjustable notch rear sight and integral rounded blade front sight. Checkered grips with small brass escutcheons surrounded by small, smooth diamonds areas of wood. Includes a single, original, unmarked blued 7-round magazine. The immediate forerunner of the venerable Colt Model 1911 pistol, the M1905 was the first of the Colt .45 caliber semi-automatic pistols and was introduced in 1905 with only 6,100 commercial models produced in a six year period. This is one of the finest examples to come to market and is worthy of being a centerpiece in a truly advanced collection of early American semi-automatic pistols.

Provenance: From the Collection of Frank H. Wheaton III

**C&R or FFL required

Condition: Very Fine to Excellent. Pistol retains nearly all of the bright blue coverage with some minor thinning and fading, some slivering along the sharp edges of the slide and some mottled discoloration that might be some old dried oil or some extremely minor surface oxidation. Some freckled oxidized speckling is present around the ejector port and strong traces of old dried grease are present along the recesses of the slide to frame junction and in some of the pin holes. Small parts like the extractor and pins retain much of their vibrant fire blue, as does the trigger, with the rear sight retaining slightly less blue. Hammer retains nearly all of its vivid case coloring. All markings remain crisp and clear, mechanically functional, fine, bright bore. Grips very fine with extremely crisp checkering and only the most minor light handling marks. Brass escutcheons with nice, old verdigris. Grip screws retain most of their vibrant fire blue and show no obvious slot wear. A truly exceptional example of a rare Colt semi-automatic pistol.

EST $8500 - 12000
