U.S. Springfield Model 1888 ''Ramrod Bayonet'' Trapdoor Infantry Rifle, #545087, .45-70 CF cal., 32-5/8'' round barrel marked ''V/P/(eagle head)'' at breech and mounted with the standard block-blade front and adjustable leaf Buffington rear sights (the latter correctly marked ''R'', for ''Rifle''); flush-mounted lockplate is marked ahead of the hammer with ''(spread-wing eagle)'' and ''U.S./Springfield'' in two lines; steel furniture including triggerguard with front sling swivel and long rear tang, grooved trigger, two spring-retained barrel bands (top band with sling swivel), nosecap, buttplate with hinged door for cleaning rod in butt trap, marked ''US'' below top tang screw, and a uniquely-retained steel ramrod with knurled pointed tip. One-piece oil-finished walnut fullstock with an ''SWP'' mark (of Master Armorer Samuel W. Porter) and the date ''1892'' within a rectangular cartouche having clipped-corners on left side opposite the lock. Mfg'd 1889-93. Condition is very good, the barrel having a smooth blue-brown tone, the lockplate, barrel bands, nosecap, triggerguard, buttplate and ramrod showing similar finish, and silvered case hardening on the breechblock (trapdoor). Markings are clear, edges are sharp, and screw head slots are unblemished. Stock is smooth and sound showing only very minor marks and excellent color; the inspector's mark at left wrist is clear. Action is crisp, bore is brilliant with sharp rifling. Est.: $650-$850. (Antique)
