.455 caliber, 7.5" octagonal barrel, S/N 3626. Blued finish, checkered walnut grips. Automatic six-shot, recoil operated, top-break revolver. Barrel rib marked: "P WEBLEY & SON LONDON & BIRMINGHAM", left side of top strap marked "WEBLEY FOSBERY" and left side of frame marked with the Webley "Flying Bullet" logo and "455 CORDITE". The serial number "3626" is on the right side of the frame, with the cylinder and barrel web both numbered with the last three digits "626", and both grips stamped with those numbers on their interiors. A small black sticker with a gold outline and the gold letters "SAFE" is present under the safety lever on the left side of the frame. Birmingham commercial proofs are found throughout. Metford rifled bore, pinned target blade front sight and drift adjustable notched rear sight blade. A lanyard ring is present in the butt.

The unique "automatic" revolver was designed by Lt. Col. George Vincent Fosbery (VC) in the late 1890s, and was similar to the Mauser Zig-Zag revolver. Fosbery took his design to P. Webely & Sons (later Webley & Scott) ca 1896-97, where the minor improvements were made and the gun was introduced at the 1900 Bisley shooting matches, going into full production the following year and remaining in production through 1924. Less than 5,000 of the guns were produced in .455 (six-shot) and .38 Colt ACP (eight-shot) during that time. The revolver is probably most noted for its use in the novel The Maltese Falcon as well as the famous 1941 film of the same name.

**C&R or FFL required

Condition: Very good. Retains some nice blue on the frame with less on the barrel and cylinder, with the exposed metal showing a mostly even plum brown over gray patina. All markings remain clear and legible, mechanically functional, although the safety seems to need some attention to operate consistently. Fine, bright bore with Metford polygonal rifling. Grips solid with some light to moderate wear. Overall a solid and attractive example of a scarce Webley "automatic" revolver that is not found for sale very often.

EST $15000 - 25000
