.44 caliber, 6" barrel, S/N 4018. Blued finish, varnished walnut grip. Double-action, 5-shot cartridge conversion revolver. Right side of frame marked in one line: "STARR ARMS Co NEW YORK" and in one line on the left side: "STARR'S PATENT JAN. 15, 1856". Marked with double-crown "U" Germanic proof marks throughout and with a small Prussian style eagle over S on the lower right side of the frame. A screw hole in the bottom of the grip suggests that a lanyard ring was previously attached at this location. An interesting alteration that includes an added cylinder arbor, supporting a newly-made 5-shot cylinder from the time of the alteration. A frame mounted firing pin and new hammer were added as part of the alteration as well. The gun was then reblued. Markings suggest that this might have been done for use by one of the German states, and might have been chambered for the 10.6x25 cartridge used in the M1873 Reichsrevolver. An interesting cartridge alteration of a Starr, and not one of the much more commonly encountered Belgian alterations or Western gunsmith conversions.

Condition: Good as refinished. Retains much of the old applied blue with some lightly scattered pitting, notably on the hammer. Markings remain legible, gun remains mechanically functional with a good bore that shows moderate oxidation. Grips refinished and remain in very good condition with scattered dings and mars.

EST $1000 - 2000
