A REVOLUTIONARY ERA GREEK DAGGER Lot #71 (Sale Order 71 of 602) Of kama form, the heirloom blade double-edged and multifullered, and inlaid in gold at the forte with the date, 918 (1512/3 c.e.) The silver hilt engraved and nielloed overall in characteristic Epirot motifs. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with later 19th c. Cretan mounts. Early 19th century. Overall length 40cm. Formerly in the collection of Samuel Gridley Howe M.D. (1801-1876,) noted American abolitionist, founder and director of the Perkins School for the Blind, the first institute of its kind. Inspired by Lord Byron, Howe sailed for Greece in 1824, where he fought for three years against the Ottomans at Missolonghi, Crete and other locations, assisting Alexandros Mavrokordatos, among other Greek notables. His wife, Julia Ward Howe, is remembered for writing the Battle Hymn of the Republic in 1861. A GREEK DAGGER OF THE CRETAN REVOLT Lot #171 (Sale Order 171 of 602) Of characteristic form, wrought entirely of silver and finely embossed and engraved with characteristic neoclassical motifs and a depiction of the Agia Kyriaki Monastery in Boutsounaria, Crete. The single-edged blade etched en suite with neoclassical scrollwork and a cross. Third quarter of the 19th c. Light wear. Overall length 29cm. Formerly in the collection of Samuel Gridley Howe M.D. (1801-1876,) noted American abolitionist. Inspired by Lord Byron, Howe sailed for Greece in 1824, where he fought for three years against the Ottomans at Missolonghi, Crete and other locations, assisting Alexandros Mavrokordatos, among other Greek patriots. Howe returned to Crete in 1866-67 to assist refugees during the Cretan Revolution, running an Ottoman blockade in order to do so; he was likely presented the dagger at that time. In November 1866, over 900 Cretans took refuge in the Agia Kyriaki Monastery, only one quarter of these were armed; most were women and children. On November 8, the Ottomans attacked the monastery but were repelled with heavy losses and began reducing its walls by cannon fire. On November 9, only the munitions chamber and a few other rooms still stood. The patriot Konstantinos Giaboudakis gathered all of the Cretan refugees into the munitions chamber and told them he planned to ignite the powder kegs when the Ottomans broke through. He offered them a final chance to attempt an escape on their own; all remained. When the Ottomans arrived at the doors, Giaboudakis touched off the powder kegs, killing hundreds of Ottoman soldiers, and all of the remaining Cretans. Condition IV

The scabbard bears the distinctive image of Satan, depicted with pointed ears and cloven hoofs, overtly fondling a virgin. The blade of steel, wrought with waved edge in emulation of a flickering flame, etched with symmetrical rays, with a slot at the center. Mid-19th c. Very light wear. The fine workmanship and symbolism suggest this dagger was made either for one of two prominent 19th c. diabolists, Eugene Vintras, founder of the Church of Carmel (1839,) or Abbot Boullan, creator of the Society for the Reparation of Souls (1856.) A FINE SUIT OF BLACK AND WHITE ARMOR Lot #250 (Sale Order 250 of 602) Very well maintained and retaining a smooth, black surface alternating with elaborately etched bands of vinework in bright steel throughout. Comprising a characteristic burgonet with two-piece combed skull, hinged cheeks, neck-lames and plumeholder. The broad gorget of six pivoting plates with rolled border. Breastplate with central ridge and panels of vegetal etching, including a Reichsadler, or double-headed eagle, suggesting the owner was an Elector or Duke of the Holy Roman Empire. The backplate etched en suite, connecting to the breastplate with locking catches and a waist belt. With complete arm defenses, the pauldrons with two upper plates and flared rims, the upper canons of four lames, the inner arms protected by the winged couters, the lower canons with rolled edges. The well-articulated gauntlets composed of eight plates in addition to the fingers. The tassets composed of six plates, each with rare squared lower edge. Each cuisse composed of two plates, each knee cop constructed of five plates with wings. The finely formed greaves with sprung catches, the multiple-lame sabatons of kuhmaul or cowmouth style with expanded toe, following the fashion of the first half of the 16th century. Mounted on an oak base with square plinth. Middle of the 16th century. General wear, legs associated in period, period repairs to helmet and greaves, fingers restored and repaired, finger leather friable, some straps replaced, black finish rubbed, etching worn in areas. A FINE IMPERIAL RUSSIAN PRESENTATION SWORD Lot #280 (Sale Order 280 of 602) A superior example of Kubachi workmanship, mounted in deeply and intricately chiseled, engraved, nielloed and gilded silver. The hilt of classic form, the pommel a rare, fully-modeled shirmani leopard's head inlaid with gold and connected by a silver gilt knuckle-chain to the crossguard, set on each side with panels of gold-inlaid shirmani at the ecusson. The fine, single-edged blade decorated with a Persian crest, with extensive calligraphic panels overall and short gold inscriptions, and the head of Shamil of Daghestan, a Kubachi hero. The velvet-covered scabbard mounted en suite with chiseled, engraved, nielloed and gilded locket, suspension bands and chape set with gold-inlaid shirmani panels en suite with the hilt. A letter found concealed in the lining of the case refers to its presentation by Tsar Nikolai II to General Nikolai N. Baratov in 1916, and its acquisition in Paris 1952 together with other pertinent details. Beginning of the 20th century. Wear and minor losses to shirmani inlays in suspension bands. Case as found. Overall length of sword 94.7cm. In 1915, General Baratov defeated the Ottomans under Abdul Kerim Pasha at Kara Kilise and also took Hamadan, Qum and Kermanshah in Persia. He received the Order of St. George, Fourth Degree in October, 1916. During the Russian Civil War, he fought in the White Army and in 1919 lost a leg on a diplomatic mission in Tiflis. He retired in exile to France in 1920, where he died in 1932. Condition III

AN IMPORTANT INDIAN KIRACH SWORD Lot #282 (Sale Order 282 of 602) South Indian, likely Mysore. The hilt wrought entirely of silver, the pommel a fully modeled and highly detailed lion's head with the mane, whiskers, fangs and tongue superbly delineated, with areas of parcel gilding. The grip flares at the base and terminates in bud finials, with deeply embossed and engraved acanthus leaves and scrolls, together with a parrot on either side. The unusual double clamshell guard duplicates the form, function and decoration of those found on French swords of the period; it is quite thick, which both protects the hand well and allows for substantial embellishment on each side. Its beaded edge is likewise a typical border for smallsword guards and is echoed on the edge of the en suite silver scabbard tip as well. Suspended from the guard is a fine crimson silk knot of eight tassels. Each is of multi-stage type and is bound with colored and silver braid. The robust blade is of kirach form, straight, with a concave backedge that meets the tip in an even curve. Both the cutting edge and backedge are quite sharp and retain their original mirror-polished chamfer. The blade is characteristically forged of two wootz billets, the superior and finely-detailed pattern silver-white in contrast with discrete dark borders and tempered quite hard. PALASKA BULLET BOX OF LORD BYRON & A RELATED BOOK Lot #301 (Sale Order 301 of 602) Consisting of the palaska bullet box of George Gordon, Sixth Lord Byron, from the Samuel Gridley Howe Collection, and a presented copy of AN HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE GREEK REVOLUTION by Samuel Gridley Howe, M.D., 1828. The palaska of bronze, modeled with a Greek Revolutionary armatolos figure with eagles and lions amongst baroque motifs in relief on the obverse, with hinged lid and belt loop to the reverse and bearing a paper label inscribed: LORD BYRON’S BULLET POUCH / DR. S.G. HOWE COLL. / PRESENTED BY LAURA E. RICHARDS. The book bound in full calf with gold-stamped spine, inscribed HENRY HOWE RICHARDS, FROM L.E.R. 1904, with an enclosed, typed card referring to the author, Samuel Gridley Howe, M.D., and LENT BY H.H. RICHARDS, with the handwritten note, PRESENTED TO MICHAEL ANAGNOS BY JULIA HOWE ANAGNOS- 1906 on the reverse. Early 19th c. Palaska shows deep patina, book well worn. Palaska height 12cm. George Gordon Byron, Sixth Lord Byron, was England’s greatest Romantic Era poet. He led an adventurous, often dangerous, existence and at age 35 journeyed to Greece to join the revolution and fight the Ottomans. Given command over a brigade of Suliots, he was preparing an attack on the Ottoman stronghold of Lepanto, but died in Missolonghi on April 19, 1824. Byron’s passing was mourned throughout the world. He became a national hero to the Greeks and his renown as a poet grew in England, Europe and America. Samuel Gridley Howe M.D. (1801-1876,) noted American abolitionist, was so inspired by Lord Byron’s cause, that he sailed for Greece in 1824 with the intention of fighting by Byron’s side. Howe arrived just weeks after Byron succumbed to fever, nonetheless fighting for six years against the Ottomans at Missolonghi, Crete and other locations, and assisting Byron’s close friend and protégé, Alexandros Mavrokordatos, among other Greek notables. Howe acquired Byron’s helmet, sword and a number of other military effects before returning to the U.S. in 1830; the helmet was repatriated to Greece in 1926, donated to the Ethnographic Museum, Athens (now the National Historical Museum) by Howe’s daughter, Maud Howe Elliot, which memorialized her father’s service to Greece as well. Howe’s eldest daughter, Laura Elizabeth Richards, celebrated American author, presented the palaska to the husband of her sister, Julia Romana Anagnos, a Greek colleague and later son-in-law of Samuel Gridley Howe, Michael Anagnos, between 1876 (the year of Samuel G. Howe’s death) and 1906, the year of Anagnos’ death (his name was shortened from Anognostopoulos. Howe had met him in Greece in 1867 and recruited him to teach Greek and Latin at the Perkins Institute for the Blind. Howe’s daughter Julia married Anagnos in 1870.) The second item in this lot, Samuel G. Howe’s book, AN HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE GREEK REVOLUTION is inscribed from Laura E. Richards to her son, Henry Howe Richards, and dated 1904. Rather than Julia Anagnos, it was likely presented to Henry Richards, Anagnos’ nephew by marriage, between 1904 and 1906, the year of his death. The image of a portrait of Samuel Gridley Howe as a Greek freedom fighter, painted by John Elliot c. 1830, now housed at Brown University, is shown for reference only and is not included with this lot. A GREEK BRONZE CHALCIDIAN HELMET Lot #303 (Sale Order 303 of 602) Of hammered bronze, a type evolved from the Corinthian helmet. The Chalcidian form first appears in art on an early fifth century b.c.e. amphora believed to have been painted at Chalcis, Euboea; this depicts two warriors; one wears the Chalcidian helmet, the other wears a Corinthian. The Chalcidian type improved visibility by expanding and arching the brows of the occularia and reducing the dimensions of the nasal and cheekplates and providing openings for the ears. This form is identified by A. Bottini et al in ANTIKE HELME, Mainz, 1988, p. 138, as Chalcidian Type V, quite distinct from its predecessors by virtue of the addition of hinges to the cheekplates. In addition, the entire lower periphery of the helmet has been wrought with a pronounced rim embossed in relief, providing glancing surfaces which protected the eyes, nose, jaw and nape. It retains the phallic-shaped skull with central ridge of its predecessors, which provided glancing surfaces to the cranium as well. The Type V saw particular use throughout Northeastern Greece or Thrace, and across Western Asia or Lydia, to the Caspian Sea and its environs. It remained in continuous use for several centuries, and was still in popular with Alexander’s armies when they marched east to conquer Asia in the 330s. The surface covered with a green oxide layer and minor incrustation, with areas of original tinning intact. Fourth century b.c.e. Very good excavated condition, conserved, with minor repairs and restoration. Overall height 36.3cm. Condition V

A RARE VARANGIAN BYZANTINE GREEK HELMET Lot #305 (Sale Order 305 of 602) Of ogival form, wrought of four direct-riveted triangular iron plates, those of the front and rear overlapping the sides, with a shallow, curved recess over the brow; each plate thickening where it intersects the others at the apex. 10th-11th c. Excavated, corroded overall, minor losses. Overall height 19cm. Varangians appear in the Byzantine chronicles as early as the 870s. The first official Varangian Bodyguard of the Byzantine Emperors begins with Basil II (r. 960-976 c.e.) and was composed of the descendants of Swedish Vikings who had settled in what is now the Ukraine. For centuries, Varangians were sought after by the Byzantines for both their exceptional military prowess and their loyalty, and so many began to emigrate from Scandinavia to join their ranks that laws were enacted there to limit the practice. The rolled silver pommel and broad guard, terminating in scallop shells, the sign of St. James, beloved of Christ and martyr, embossed and engraved with neoclassical motifs and intact knucklechain. A RARE BYZANTINE PARAMERION SWORD Lot #309 (Sale Order 309 of 602) The term meaning “splitter” in Greek, a massive weapon. A distinctly Byzantine form of saber displaying unique characteristics: long, exceptionally broad blade, quite thin in cross-section, with a central fuller, and edges tapering gradually yet continuously to the rounded tip (a tip treatment characteristic of Greco-Roman cavalry swords.) Traditionally viewed as a Byzantine borrowing of the nomadic saber, these characteristics reveal that the paramerion is actually a development of the Greco-Roman spatha. Retains its original guard which, by contrast, reflects a distinct Ottoman prototype: of steel with lightly-tapering quillons and triangular langets. Excavated, with remains of the wooden scabbard attached. 12th-13th c. Corroded overall. Overall length 98.3cm. A GREEK BRONZE CHALCIDIAN HELMET Lot #317 (Sale Order 317 of 602) Of hammered bronze, evolved from the Corinthian helmet. The Chalcidian form first appears in art on an early fifth century b.c.e. amphora believed to have been painted at Chalcis, Euboea; this depicts two warriors; one wears the Chalcidian helmet, the other wears a Corinthian. The Chalcidian type improved visibility by expanding and arching the brows of the occularia and reducing the dimensions of the nasal and cheekplates and providing openings for the ears. This form is identified by A. Bottini et al in ANTIKE HELME, Mainz, 1988, p. 138, as Chalcidian Type V, quite distinct from its predecessors by virtue of the addition of hinges to the cheekplates. In addition, the entire lower periphery of the helmet has been wrought with a pronounced rim embossed in relief, providing glancing surfaces which protected the eyes, nose, jaw and nape. It retains the phallic-shaped skull with central ridge of its predecessors, which provided glancing surfaces to the cranium as well. The Type V saw particular use throughout Northeastern Greece or Thrace, and across Western Asia or Lydia, to the Caspian Sea and its environs. It remained in continuous use for several centuries, and was still in popular with Alexander’s armies when they marched east to conquer Asia in the 330s. The surface covered with a green oxide layer and incrustation, with areas of original tinning intact. Fourth century b.c.e. Good excavated condition; reconstructed and conserved, with significant restoration. Overall height 29.4cm. Condition V

A BATTLE AXE OF SULTAN ALI DINAR OF DARFUR Lot #378 (Sale Order 378 of 602) The handwrought, bearded steel blade with flanged bronze poll, inscribed on the left: MALIK AL SULTAN ALI DINAR 121 (1786/7 c.e.) and on the right: AL SULTAN MUHAMMAD AL-FAZAL IBN AL SULTAN ZAKARIYA, the title and lineage of Sultan Ali Dinar of Darfur (r.1891-1916,) the date commemorating the rise of his ancestor, Muhammad II Tairab, to the throne of Darfur. On its leather-covered wooden haft, the silver mounts with beaded borders, and a tuft of fur. End of the 19th c. Minor wear. Sultan Ali Dinar was highly regarded in the Dar al Islam, and sided with his Ottoman coreligionists during WWI. As a result, Darfur was invaded by British forces; Ali Dinar was killed in battle in 1916 (image not included in this lot.) The two-piece skull with roped comb, the well-formed visor and bevor sharing a common pivot as is typical, the visor with raising stud and characteristic prominent ridge between the occularia, the bevor with separate raising stud and 14 diagonal breaths, retained by a sprung catch. The gorget composed of two pairs of lames with roped edges and riveted borders, with a hook at the right and closing studs to either side. Retains its profiled plumetube. C. 1550-1600. A RARE OTTOMAN CICAK HELMET Lot #400 (Sale Order 400 of 602) The classic form worn by the Sipahi, or Ottoman cavalry, with hemispherical bowl wrought of a single plate of steel with applied, finial, brim, nasal, cheek- and neckplates. The captured nasal retained by a rectangular staple with set-screw, the large cheekplates with semicircular notches and rolled edges, embossed at the center with raised, pierced shields for the ears and retaining the original brass studs which retained the lining (now lacking.) The neckplate of rounded, concave form likewise studded with brass studs, connected to the bowl with characteristic pierced, profiled and hinged plates. Second half of the 16th c. Finial and cheekplate hinges replaced in period, three brass studs lacking. The Topkapi Sarayi and Military Museum, Istanbul, and Tower of London Armouries, Leeds, contain similar examples. A PERSIAN ARMOR SET Lot #406 (Sale Order 406 of 602) Qajar Dynasty work, comprising a helmet of unusual, possibly unique form, inspired by the German spiked helmet. With captured nasal, plume holders and spike finial, the skull deeply peaked at front and rear, and etched overall with Persian warriors, tigers and other beasts amongst foliage, with elaborately calligraphed borders and Persian lions bearing shamshirs, all heightened with gold and silver inlay. Retains its full camail terminating in eight points. The shield decorated en suite with the helmet, with four inlaid central bosses and applied brass rim. Mid-19th century. A RARE SWORD RAPIER OF THE SCHMALKALDIC LEAGUE Lot #427 (Sale Order 427 of 602) An elegant transitional weapon of massive proportions, the swept hilt composed of broad steel branches of lenticular section, superbly profiled, pierced and engraved throughout, the cross with expanded, circular terminals set with finely-pierced hemispherical appliques, a treatment reflected on the ring guards, knucklebow and either side of the large, ovate pommel as well. The reverse with graceful branches springing from the lower ring guard and connecting at the midpoint of the knucklebow. The grip retains its twisted steel wire wrap with brass turkshead knots. Very lightly pitted, pommel slightly loose, grip wrap likely a working life replacement. The Schmalkaldic League was founded in 1531, in order to defend Protestantism against the Holy Roman Empire. Founded by John Frederic I, Elector of Saxony and Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse. The League’s motto was VERBUM DEI MANET IN AETERNUM. Condition III.

A RARE INDIAN ARMOR CUIRASS Lot #433 (Sale Order 433 of 602) One of a small number of rare European-style cuirasses made for the Nizam of Hyderabad in the late 17th-early 18th century. Displaying evidence of wootz forging, the breastplate with well-modeled pectorals, both breast and backplate with central ridge. With separately applied scalloped steel borders with projecting central trefoil throughout, the backplate with applied standing neckguard. A FINE OTTOMAN COMBINATION RIDING CROP PISTOL Lot #462 (Sale Order 462 of 602) Of Circassian form, wrought of silver and superbly nielloed overall with naturalistic roses on intertwined stems, finely drawn and shadowed, together with an oval panel containing a pair of snakes twined around a blade surmounted by a crescent moon, and on the spherical pommel, a monogram composed of the letters M. K. When the grip is rotated at the midsection, the crop slides open to reveal a chamber for a small bore bullet. After loading, it is it is again rotated to the closed position, automatically cocking the pistol. After removing the tompion or plug from the tip of the crop, the pommel cap is flipped open to reveal a stud trigger. A sliding safety is located just above the pommel. First quarter of the 20th c. A BATTLE AXE OF SULTAN ALI DINAR OF DARFUR Lot #530 (Sale Order 530 of 602) The brass blade with stamped decoration and flanged bronze poll, inscribed on the right: MALIK AL SULTAN ALI DINAR IBN AL SULTAN ZAKARIA and on the left: SULTAN MOHAMMED AL-FAZAL [and] IBN ABD’ AL RAHMAN AL RASHID, the title and lineage of Sultan Ali Dinar of Darfur (r.1891-1916.) On its leather-covered wooden haft, the silver mounts with beaded borders. End of the 19th c. Minor wear. Sultan Ali Dinar was highly regarded in the Dar al Islam, and sided with his Ottoman coreligionists during WWI. As a result, Darfur was invaded by British forces; Ali Dinar was killed in battle in 1916 (image not included in this lot.)
