Antique American Fullstock Percussion Sporting Rifle, by Henry E. Leman of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, NVSN, approx. .50 cal., 31.75'' octagonal barrel with very long top tang, two silver bands at breech, and dovetailed German silver blade front and dovetailed open rear sights, marked on top flat ahead of breech, ''H.E. Leman/Lancaster, PA'' in two lines and ''Warranted''; long serpentine lockplate is marked ''H.E. Leman/Lancaster, PA'' and lightly floral engraved, as is matching hammer; double set triggers; brass furniture including engraved triggerguard with finger-rest, fancy engraved patchbox having a hinged door opening to a trap for patches and spare parts; crescent buttplate with extended lower tang; 3 under-barrel ramrod ferrules, and nosecap; varnished American walnut fullstock having a carved left-side cheekpiece and basket-weave checkering at wrist. Condition is poor showing much age and use with heavy deep erosion to iron parts and dark patina to brass; stock shows a fracture at wrist held together by twisted copper wire, a piece missing at bottom of buttplate, and much battering and neglect. Lacks hardwood ramrod. Action and triggers are frozen, with hammer at full-cock and inoperable; bore is dirty and corroded. A stout and serviceable rifle in its day; enhanced by its famous maker, Henry E. Leman, an early supplier to the fur and Indian trades. Est.: $400-$600. (Antique)
