.60 caliber, 8" pinned round barrel, no S/N. Brass barrel and furniture, iron lock, walnut stock. Top flat of barrel engraved "MINORIES LONDON" within a decorative board with the breech stamped with London gunmakers proof and view marks, as well as a "*/RW" makers mark. 4.75" long, convex iron lock with integral bridled and fenced iron pan is marked WILSON. Lock with simple floral engraving at the tail and decorative board lines engraved as well. Flat, reinforced cock with floral engraving. Lock remains in original flint, although the top jaw and screw may be old replacements. Brass furniture includes a grotesque mask butt cap with delicately engraved 2.25" long langets, a flowing 4.5" two-screw side plate with the rear portion being open work, triggerguard with acorn finial and floral engraved bow, and a pair of ramrod pipes. A brass thumb piece is set into the wrist with a harp motif. Stock has a nicely executed raised carved apron around the engraved iron breech plug tang. Includes a brass tipped wood ramrod that is likely an old replacement. A nice, mid-18th century pistol.

Richard Wilson (1703-1766) was apprenticed to his gun making uncle Thomas Green in 1718, was free of the Gunmakers Company in 1725 and submitted his proof piece in 1730 (Blackmore). He took over the business of Anges Green in the Minories in 1730 and was elected Master of the Gunmakers Company in 1741. Wilson served as a contractor to the East India Company from 1733-1736, the Hudson Bay Company from 1730-1756, and the Board of Ordnance from 1746. In 1757 his son William joined the company, becoming Richard & William Wilson & Co and in 1759 the firm was renamed simply "Richard Wilson & Co.".

Condition: Good. Brass with a gentle golden patina and indications of an old, light cleaning. Markings remain clear and sharp throughout. Lock cleaned to bright with speckled oxidation and light pinpricking. Lock in original flint and mechanically functional. Bore good with moderate oxidation and roughness throughout. Stock good with several old repairs including a glued crack running though the lock mortise to the triggerguard, a diagonal crack forward of the lock mortise and several diagonal grain cracks in the forend.
