Tipping & Lawden Model 2B Pepperbox Pistol

Lot # 24 (Sale Order: 24 of 1059)

serial #3120, 30 RF, 3" barrels with about very good bores showing some minor pitting. The barrels retain about 95% original blue, the loss being some flaky wear, most prevalent along the left lower barrel. The frame retains about 98% original silverplate, also showing some minor casting flaws in the form of small pits in the area adjacent to the hammer. The left side of the frame is marked in the familiar circular pattern with Tipping & Lawden and Sharp's Patent. The barrel catch shows traces of some pale fire temper blue with some trace case colors on the hammer. The foliate gutta-percha grips rate very good plus to near excellent showing only very light wear. The barrel-to-frame lockup is excellent and the gun seems to function well mechanically. The pistol comes in a walnut and burl presentation case with monogram plate atop the lid. The blue baize lining rates excellent and there is a blued steel ebony-handle turnscrew included. Another interesting inclusion is a small BSA-marked spanner wrench which would accommodate a 1/4" hex nut, its opposite end is a small pin punch about 1/2" long. The case rates very good plus overall with only minor dings and handling marks from the years. A very attractive, un-embellished Tipping & Lawden pepperbox pistol. Engraved Tipping & Lawden Model 1A Pepperbox Pistol

Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 25 of 1059)

serial #1017, 22 RF, 2 5/8" barrels with about very good bores which show strong rifling but with minor pitting. The barrel cluster retains about 95% of what appears to be original nickel with some light flaking and a few spots of very light pitting. There is simple line engraving at the muzzles with some nice loose flowing scroll at the breeches and stippled thumbprint areas left and right on the barrel flanked by the same nice loose flowing scroll. The frame is engraved overall with loose flowing scroll and background shading. It retains about 5-10% original silverplate, the balance toned to a dull ocher patina. Both hammer and trigger appear to have been nickeled as well retaining much of their original finish. The foliate gutta-percha grips rate very good plus on the right and about very good with the left showing more wear. Barrel-to-frame fit is only slightly loose and the gun functions well mechanically however the hammer spring is somewhat weak. Overall a very attractive example which would look handsome in a period casing. (36229-304) {ANTIQUE} [Elliott Riggs Collection]
