Stained Glass Window By Richard Spaulding "Homage To Hokusia", Two-Panel Window

Lot # 2

Stained glass window in two parts by prominent Northwest Artist Richard Spaulding, designed and fabricated in 1978 as a commission for the Greenlake Branch of the Seattle Public Library in Seattle, Wa.  In recent years the building codes were updated and the glasswork was determined to be outside the new codes.  After searching for another site to install and display this wonderful  work, the Seattle Public Library de-accessioned the work back to the artist in 2012.  It has been completely restored and cleaned.  The top panel has been newly framed and transport packing cases have been made for both panels.  This work was inspired by the wood cuts by Katsushika Hokusai.  The Japanese artist created the work titled "Amida Waterfall on the liso Road" from a series titled "Journey to the Waterfalls in all the Provinces," circa 1832.  The materials used in this two-panel window are European antique glass and lead.  Artist Richard Spaulding was born in 1947 in Detroit. Michigan, and has worked in architectural glass works since 1975. His works can be found in the New York Public Library in mid-Manhattan, and the Queen Anne Library in Seattle, as well as the Scripps Ranch Library in San Diego, CA, and the Volunteer Park Conservatory in Seattle.  He has had numerous commissions for private residences throughout the US, and has exhibited in Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Japan and Brazil.  An archive of his work can be found at www.spauldingstudio.com.  He now works and lives in a forest outside Seattle.  This two-panel window can be seen in Snohomish. WA by appointment.  Call Mick Odell, 206-542-4460.
