WINCHESTER MODEL 1892 CARBINE (1923)

Lot # 265 (Sale Order: 281 of 831)

The 1892 carbine with it's 20" barrel and chambered for the .25-20 Winchester and it's full tube of ammunition was a favorite of fur trappers during the early part of the 20th century. Lightweight and handy barrel length appealed to the man who need a carbine chambered for a light round to finish off his catch or shooting small game for a good stew, this was the gun of choice. This is a standard carbine with the 20" barrel, full magazine, post front sight, folding two leaf rear sight, blue finish and walnut stocks with carbine steel butt. This was a so-called Eastern carbine that was made without a saddle ring since this rifle was carried on foot, not usually on horseback. The barrel and frame are basically a rich brown patina with sharp legends. The tube retains about 90% blue which would indicate a replacement. The loading gate still has most of the blue finish. The walnut stocks are excellent with some added finish. Fine bore and action. *(C&R)

WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 "YELLOW BOY" SRC

Lot # 267 (Sale Order: 283 of 831)

Arguable the most talked about , filmed and best known Winchester ever made, the Belle of the Western frontier and south of the border, the 1866 Yellow Boy carbine. It is fairly standard having been made in 1889, long after the 1873 was introduced. It features a 20" barrel, full magazine, post front sight, 1873 style folding ladder rear sight, twin barrel bands, 1873 style steel butt-plate with trap-door and distinctive brass frame. This gun has seen lots of use and appears to be of western origin due to this wear. The barrel and bands are a dark patina with a somewhat roughness to the texture. The brass shows a nice patina. The rear stock does not fit real well and does not quite match the fore-end which leads one to believe it was replaced or at the very least , refinished at one time. The fore-end has a few mar. The action works fine. The rifling is visible but rough which is not uncommon due to the black powder .44 rimfire cartridges. The saddle ring and stud are present.. These guns saw hard use and loads of time on the saddle and rarely have high condition. This example is at least good and has a wonderful western look. (A)

WINCHESTER MODEL 1894 RIFLE (1925)

Lot # 268 (Sale Order: 284 of 831)

Serial #961788. This rifle is chambered for the .32-40 cartridge which was a hold-over from the old black powder days and had lost popularity by this time making it a scarce caliber to have been made this late in the game. Standard features include a 26" octagon barrel, full magazine, dovetail front sight, two leaf folding rear sight, blue finish, walnut stocks with rifle butt-plate. The barrel and tube retain at least 90% original factory blue finish with average high edge wear, some wear at muzzle with light handling marks and freckling. The frame finish has flaked and is now a smooth mix of patina and gun metal gray. There is still plenty of blue on the loading gate and the extractor. The stocks are proud to metal with usual light mars and impressions but are quite nice. The rifling is sharp. The barrel legends are crisp as is the action. A nice, clean and honest example of an American classic. *(C&R)

WINCHESTER MODEL 64 LEVER ACTION RIFLE (1951)

Lot # 269 (Sale Order: 285 of 831)

Serial #1737052. In an attempt to update the Model 1894 to appear to be a modern firearm rather than an old cowboy's gun, Winchester brought out the Model 64 in 1933 to replace the earlier updated Model 94, the Model 55. The action was still an 1894 but they added, as standard, a ramp front sight on the 24" barrel with usual semi-buckhorn rear sight, standard half magazine, rakish pistol grip walnut stock with flutes and checkered steel butt-plate and a swelled fore-end. The old 30-30 was still offered as is this rifle. Finish is standard blue. The barrel and tube have some minor high edge wear and muzzle wear with a few handling marks, still solid 95% original finish. The frame has high edge and light carry wear, retaining approximately 95% plus original blue. The stocks are handsome with just some minor impressions. The bore is sharp. *(C&R)

WINCHESTER MODEL 71 LEVER ACTION RIFLE (1947)

Lot # 270 (Sale Order: 286 of 831)

Serial #24289. Another attempt by Winchester to update the old Model 1886 but still using the same frame as the old model. They also introduced the Model 71 in a brand new big bore caliber, the .348 Winchester round. This round was the exclusive property of the Model 71 that was never offered in any other cartridge. This rifle is the so called "Short Tang" standard rifle that featured a 24" barrel, ramp front sight, filled rear sight slot with another Winchester exclusive, the bolt mounted peep sight. The half magazine was standard and the only type used on this model. The finish was the high polish Winchester blue frame with rust blue barrel and tube. The walnut stock was also updated with a fluted straight comb, modern profile pistol grip, swelled fore-end with a checkered steel shotgun butt-plate and sling eyes. The blue finish on this fine rifle is virtually 98% with some minor handling marks. The wood has usual light impressions and small areas of finish loss with some light wear at high edges. The only detraction on this rifle is that three left side frame sight or scope mount holes have been professionally drilled and filled. Fine bore and action. *(C&R)

WINCHESTER MODEL 1892 SRC (1924)

Lot # 271 (Sale Order: 287 of 831)

Serial #932827. This rather standard Model 1892 SRC features the scarce rifle butt-stock rather than the typical carbine style. All other features were par to include the 20" barrel, full magazine, post front sight, folding single leaf express style rear sight, added tang sight, walnut stocks with saddle ring and stud. The carbine is chambered for the .25-20 round which was extremely popular during the roaring twenties with trappers who carried this handy gun while checking their lines. It was the perfect cartridge for small game. This rifle saw solid line use. The barrel and tube are a pleasing blend of blue and gun metal gray patina with razor sharp barrel legends. The frame has flaked to a gun metal gray with light patina with flashes of blue finish under the lever. The loading gate and lever retain generous amounts of finish. The walnut stocks are proud to metal with usual dings and impressions and have dulled finish but are clean and free of stress cracks. Strong rifled bore and crisp action. *(C&R)

Serial #262677. Made in 1904. Factory research confirms all of the special features and was shipped on August 19, 1904. The barrel is a pleasing homogenous patina as is the frame. The stocks have usual impressions with some scattered abrasions. The butt-plate appears to be a modern, correct style, butt-plate. RARE SPECIAL ORDER HEAVY BARREL WINCHESTER 1886

Lot # 276 (Sale Order: 292 of 831)

Serial #23207. Factory research lists this rifle with all correct features but the barrel does not list as heavy. Gun was shipped on Sept. 25, 1888. This is a very hard to find example of a factory heavy barrel Model 1886 rifle in caliber 40-82 WCF. The top of the barrel flat is almost flush to the top of frame and measures 26" in length. Another special order extra is the set trigger. Other features include a full magazine, blade front sight, buckhorn rear sporting sight with walnut stocks and rifle butt. This rifle dates to 1888. The barrel is a smooth mix of light factory blue and soft patina. The tube is basically a mix of patina and gun metal. The case colors on frame, hammer and lever have basically nickeled out and softened to gun metal tone. The stocks are excellent with usual light dings. The stocks are flush to metal. Action is crisp and the bore shows well defined rifling with just minor abrasion. The extra heavy barrels were only a special order feature and not found on several models. The Model 1886 was built for heavy game and a few of the old buffalo shooters still swore by them. (A)

SCARCE COLT BURGESS LEVER ACTION RIFLE

Lot # 278 (Sale Order: 294 of 831)

Serial #3352. According to the much repeated legend, Winchester turned a blind eye when Colt introduced the slide action Lightning Rifle but when they introduced the Colt Burgess lever action, the gloves came off and Winchester began producing some prototype Winchester handguns. Apparently, the two heads of state came to an agreement that Winchester would abandon the handgun idea if Colt would agree to cancel the lever action series. How this actually went down is lost to history but this story lives on. The lever action Burgess model was introduced in 1883 and disappeared sometime in 1885. A total of 3810 rifles and 1621 carbines were made during this time spread. This rifle features a 24" octagon barrel, full tube, replaced dovetail front sight, sporting rear sight with walnut stocks and rifle butt. Some aspiring wood carver lightly carved a pair of mallards in flight on left side of stock and antlered game on right side. It is very tasteful and well executed. The stocks were refinished at that time and are slightly shy to metal with usual handling marks. There is a crack and missing piece on right side of fore-end and a professional repair would greatly enhance the look of this rifle. The metal is basically devoid of any original blue finish and is now a gun metal gray mixed with patina. The rifling is sharp and clean and the action is fine. The rifle is chambered for the popular .44-40 cartridge. (A)
