In A Piegan Lodge by E.S. Curtis Limited Edition

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 538)

This is a rare limited edition piece from the original plate by master printmaker D. Sacilotto. The piece is a Edward Sheriff Curtis (American, 1868-1952) taken photography from 1910 titled, “In A Piegan Ladge”. This is marked across the bottom by the print maker and signed/dated 1974. This is one of Curtis’s most breathtaking images and most controversial. Originally the image included a small alarm clock, which was most likely traded to the Indians in the photograph, but Curtis removed the clock in an effort to make the Indians look more ‘authentic’. A subgroup of the Blackfoot tribe, the Piegan are of Algonquin stock and inhabited the Plains and Prairies region of North America. They were the quintessential Plains Indians, and in his notes, Curtis described them as amiable people, who had a propensity for social formalities and were easy to work with. Frame measures 22 3/8”x26 3/8”. This comes with a copy of “Edward S. Curtis Coming To Light” by Anne Makepeace.
