Shvaiko chafed under the stifling effect that the lingering Russian bureaucracy had on the careers of young artists. Unable to get a visa to a Western country, Viktor was permitted to travel to Yugoslavia . In the confusion of the civil war, he fled to Italy with his paintings strapped to his back, often encountering gunfire from roving bands of militia. Having arrived in Italy virtually penniless, Viktor survived by selling his paintings on the streets of Rome. He managed to build a following for himself, and save some money. He eventually returned to a now more liberalized Russia, and was able to obtain passage to America.

HOWARD BEHRENS "VILLA PORTOFINO" SERIGRAPH SIGNED/#

Lot # 339 (Sale Order: 462 of 585)

HOWARD BEHRENS "VILLA PORTOFINO" HAND SIGNED AND NUMBERED LIMITED EDITION hand signed serigraph entitled "VILLA PORTOFINO " by HOWARD BEHRENS depicting a European harbour...more. This piece is in Excellent condition. Image Size: 16" x 20" Edition size 350 About the Artist: For the past 25 years, Howard Behrens, the world's most renowned palette knife artist, has had a romance with the sun. From the idyllic lakes of Italy to the intimate gardens of New England, the artist has danced with her, chased her, seen her in her many different moods. Behrens' motivation comes from his strong passion to capture the "essence" of the places he visits around the world. The artist has been influenced by Monet, Van Gogh and Nicola Simbari, the Italian palette knife artist. Behrens attempts to express his love for the radiance of the sun's gifts - shadow, light, color, and the subtle nuances of these elements. Many years ago, Behrens learned that the only way he can really achieve what he feels in his paintings is to create them using a palette knife for its boldness and control of color instead of a brush. Behrens has had over 150 one-man shows from coast-to-coast since becoming a professional artist in 1980. His works have been on the covers of many art publications and he has been the featured subject of numerous magazines and newspapers. After visiting Giverny, France, last year, the artist created a "Tribute to Monet" series that was exhibited at the Embassy of France in Washington, D. C. As an official artist for the 2002 Winter Olympics, Behrens' painting, "In Motion," was featured at the games. The artist's works are owned by numerous, well-known collectors and are in the permanent collections of many museums. The most recent Behrens' collectors are former President George Bush and Mrs. Barbara Bush. Behrens and his wife, Judi, travel the world - Italy, Bermuda, Mexico, across America - to many of their favorite places filled with gardens, inns, vistas, and villas. Celebrate romance with Behrens, a poet sculpting paint on canvases that are alive with color, and join him on a romance with the sun that will never end.

Alexander and Wissotzky serigraph signed & numbered

Lot # 347 (Sale Order: 466 of 585)

Artist: Alexander and Wissotzky. Dimensions: 10inc x 12inc. Brief Description: Year 2004 Edition 490 More details: TANYA WISSOTZKY AND ALEXANDER GLATCHANSKY The works of ...moreTanya Wissotzky and Alexander Glatchansky are created by the interaction of two independent imaginations working in intellectual and aesthetic harmony. Each complements the other, producing works in which the process of creation is revealed as it reaches a harmonious yet complex resolution. They have achieved a painterly idiom which is a visual dynamic of crescendo and diminuendo, a vibration between the sensuous and cerebral. Working in acrylic, pen and ink, and collage on specially prepared canvas, they speak in many voices which are yet one voice. The subdued pastel tones of the background swirl and gather romantically to focal points as rich in association as they are in colour. Superimposed upon them are the learned and expert line drawings of scenes both evocative and ironic. These scenes, like sketches from the artist's notebook, each contain a world of their own while commenting on the canvas as a whole. The excerpts of calligraphy from old English flower painting manuals underline the concern with process as well as result, while other calligraphic quotations celebrate Paris of the Twenties which is certainly one of the artists' many sources of visual reference. In the still lifes, the classically executed centrepiece has all the nostalgia and romanticism of a time past, the colour rich and sensuous. Juxtaposed against this are the music scores, totally dry and abstract and yet evocative of gaiety and pleasure. The eye is caught in pleasant surprise as the smaller quotations, in collage ink or paint, reveal themselves, linking the chain of associations in fascinatingly various ways. The work of this pair of young Israeli artists has received critical acclaim and success both in Israel and abroad and their works are to be found in public and private collections all over the world. Tanya Wissotzky and Alexander Glatchansky were born in the same year, 1959, and studied at the Odessa Academy of Fine Arts. One of Ms. Wissotzky's main interests besides her work as an artist is in the conservation of Nature. Alexander Glatchansky is a fine book illustrator in his own right and has been awarded prizes for his achievements in this field.Dimensions: 10inc x 12incBrief Description: Year 2004 Edition 490More details: TANYA WISSOTZKY AND ALEXANDER GLATCHANSKY The works of Tanya Wissotzky and Alexander Glatchansky are created by the interaction of two independent imaginations working in intellectual and aesthetic harmony.
