Rare Plain Frame 3rd Variation Moore's Patent No 1 Metal Derringer

Lot # 233 (Sale Order: 229 of 370)

.41RF caliber, 2.5" barrel, S/N 299. Plain silver-plated steel frame, blued barrel. Action release button on right side of frame, curved trigger sheath. Top of barrel stamped "D. MOORE" and "PATENTED FEB. 19, 1861." With two separate stamps. The 3rd variation markings were applied with two stamps, one for the patent mark and one for the date. According to the research of noted derringer collector, researcher and author L.D. Eberhart, only 425 pistols were produced with this 3rd variation marking variation and of those he believes less than six were produced with the plain frame that was not engraved.

Approximately 3,000 Moore No 1 Derringers of all variations were produced circa 1861-1865 before the company was acquired by National Arms and subsequently by Colt in 1870. The Moore No 1 was the first large bore metallic cartridge derringer produced in America. This pistol created a new category of self-defense handgun that would find favor with those looking for a large caliber pistol in a diminutive and discrete package, which would remain quite popular for several decades.

Provenance: From the L.D. Eberhart Collection

Condition: Fine. Frame retains some of the silver plating on the frame and some traces of blue on the barrel. Markings remain clear and legible. Mechanically functional, very good bore with clear rifling and some evenly distributed pitting. A very nice example of an extremely scarce, plain frame production version of the 3rd Variant Moore's Patent No 1 Derringer, of which only 425 were produced.

Extremely Rare 1st Type Moore's Patent No 1 Metal Derringer - Serial #2

Lot # 234 (Sale Order: 230 of 370)

.41CF caliber, 2.5" barrel, S/N 2. Engraved silver-plated brass frame, silver-plated barrel. Action release button on left side of frame, straight trigger sheath. Top of barrel engraved "PATENT APPLIED FOR." According to the research of noted derringer collector, researcher and author L.D. Eberhart, less than 50 of these early, 1st Model pistols were produced with the action release on the left side of the frame. Of those, he notes that 12 are known to survive today. This one, serial numbered "2" and without the official patent markings was the second pistol of this pattern to be produced and is a very important pistol in history of metallic cartridge derringer development. The pistol used a reloadable steel cartridge system and one of these steel cartridge inserts (not loaded) is included with the pistol.

Condition: Very good. Retains none of the plated finish with the frame having an attractive and untouched butterscotch patina. Barrel cleaned to bright with some scattered surface oxidation and discoloration as as well as some light pitting. Mechanically functional, very good bore with some moderate oxidation. An extremely rare and historically important Moore's Patent No 1 Derringer, only the second one ever produced.

Fine 5th Variation Moore's Patent No 1 Metal Derringer

Lot # 235 (Sale Order: 231 of 370)

.41RF caliber, 2.5" barrel, S/N 1443. Engraved silver-plated brass frame, silver-plated barrel with simple engraving. Action release button on right side of frame, curved trigger sheath. Top of barrel with left-hand single line stamp "MOORE'S PAT. F.A. Co. BROOKLYN NY." Bottom of the barrel stamped with the serial number and "PAT. FEB 24, 1863." The 5th variation markings were stamped with a single stamp reading from the muzzle to the frame on top of the barrel with the patent date on the bottom of the barrel. According to the research of noted derringer collector, researcher and author L.D. Eberhart, the balance of the production of Moore's No 1 Derringers were of this pattern with this style of patent markings.  Mr. Eberhart further notes that only about 5 examples are known with the thumb-print checkering found on the back strap of this pistol.

Approximately 3,000 Moore No 1 Derringers of all variants were produced circa 1861-1865 before the company was acquired by National Arms who produced another 3,000 of this model. The company was subsequently acquired by Colt in 1870 and continued to produce these pistols for a short period of time.

Retains much of the moderately tarnished silver plating on the pistol with some bubbling on the barrel. Markings remains fully legible. Mechanically functional, very good bore. A wonderful example of a fully silver-plated late production Moore's No 1 Derringer produced prior to the National Arms take over, from the collection of noted derringer expert L.D. Eberhart.

Eberhart, only about 80 of these scarce 4th variant marking No 1 Derringers were produced.

Approximately 3,000 Moore No 1 Derringers were produced circa 1861-1865 before the company was acquired by National Arms, who produced about 3,000 more before being acquired by Colt in 1870. .45 caliber, 4.75" barrel, S/N 225632 (mfg. ca 1902). Nickel-plated finish, carved steer head mother-of-pearl grips. Matching numbers on the frame and triggerguard with a silver escutcheon plate added to the bottom of the grip frame concealing that number. Two-line barrel address, three-date in two-line patent mark on left of frame with Rampant Colt logo, caliber mark and "BISLEY MODEL" on left of barrel. Smokeless power frame. Returned to factory circa mid-1920s to be factory engraved and refinished. Factory work number "436N" is present under the grips on the left side of the grip frame twice, as well as in the hinge of the loading gate. Continental Heavy Barreled Swivel Breech Breechloading Percussion Rifle

Lot # 249 (Sale Order: 245 of 370)

.72 caliber, 25" heavy octagonal barrel with .625" flats, no S/N. Bright finish, iron furniture, straight gripped checkered buttstock. Unmarked, Damascus patterned barrel with frame and back action percussion lock heavily engraved with foliate scrolls. Breech and muzzle with decorative gold inlays. Sea monster motif percussion hammer engraved to match the lock. Elevation adjustable rear sight the multiple apertures, horizontally adjustable front sight blade. An interesting heavy barreled breechloading rifle that appears to have relied upon reloadable chamber inserts that included the percussion bolster and nipple. Pushing a button under the forend allows the barrel to pivot to the left, exposing the chamber on the right side of the frame. A .9" x .4" rectangular slot is cut in the right side of the breech and the hammer geometry is designed to hit a percussion bolster that would extend through this window. No such chamber insert is included with the rifle.

Condition: Very good. Metal with a dull gray patina and some scattered surface oxidation. Gold remains in tact and bright. Most of the engraving is clear and crisp, some of the Damascus patterning on the barrel is lightly worn. Mechanically functional, no chamber insert, very good bore with deep rifling. Stock with scattered bumps, dings, marks and mars.
