Remarkable Pair of German Roberts System Single-Shot Pistols by Gebruder Lindenschmit

Lot # 296 (Sale Order: 292 of 370)

A most unusual and rare pair of breach loading single-shot rifled pistols. The 6.5" multi-groove rifled octagonal barrels of fine Damascus with gilt band at breech and steel fore-sight engraved "Gebruder Lindenschmit in Mainz", numbered "1" and "2" at breech. Breeches are finely engraved in the Empire manner.  Hinged breech blocks lift vertically in typical Roberts system action. The screws, pieced hinges, breech tangs, triggerguards, and long steel reinforcing bars all finely engraved in the French manner.  Figured walnut three-quarter stock of French Empire form finely chip carved at wrists.  Steel pommel caps.

These unique pistols are most unusual, as according to Stockel, one Lindenschmidt brother died in 1802 and the other in 1814, with Joseph Alexandre Robert system firearms dating from 1832. It is conceivable that the Lindenschmidts were really the inventors of the system.

Condition: Condition overall is very good with the barrels retaining considerable original Damascus finish.  Actions are crisp and the stocks are fine with minor marks. Engraving is crisp throughout and rifled bores are good. This is a most intriguing and potentially very important high quality pair of very early mechanism and ignition pistols from the renowned collection of Mark Aziz.
