Second Type US 1875 Springfield Trapdoor Officer's Rifle

Lot # 80 (Sale Order: 78 of 370)

.45-70, 26" barrel, no S/N. Blued and color case hardened finish, checkered highly figured stock with smaller pattern detachable checkered pistol grip and engraved pewter forend cap. Lock engraved with simple foliate scrolls, over standard Springfield markings. Barrel with small sized V/P/Eagle Head proof marks, and no additional inspection marks. No cartouche on counterpane, as is correct for the officer's rifles of this period, no circle-P inspection in belly of stock behind the checkering. Top of breech block marked in three lines: "US / MODEL / 1873", with the deeply struck "3" appearing as an "8." Narrow receiver, low arch breech, with more detailed foliate engraving than found on later rifles, with additional engraving on barrel band, buttplate, breech block, triggerguard, hammer and breech block release, all somewhat more elaborate than on later production rifles. Folding tang mounted rear sight with small oval base without calibrations, Freeman R. Bull pattern rifle rear sight, folding blade/globe front sight. Two-click tumbler, smooth-faced single-set trigger.

Includes the original, late production nickel plated brass tipped wooden cleaning rod with nickel jag on opposite end. Only 477 Officer's Rifles were produced at Springfield circa 1875-1885 with only 252 of the "second type" rifles produced. This is a solid example that would be a nice addition to any collection of Trapdoor Springfields.

Condition: Very good. Retains much of the blue on the barrel, which is thinning and fading. Breech block with faded traces of case color. All markings and engraving remain clear and crisp. Mechanically excellent, fine, bright bore. Ramrod ferrule has been reattached to the barrel. Figured stock has been lightly sanded and checkering probably recut at it remains quite crisp. Buttplate very slightly proud of the wood. Stock with some scattered handling marks.

Lot # 81 (Sale Order: 79 of 370)

.45-70, 26" barrel, no S/N. Blued and color case hardened finish, checkered stock with engraved pewter forend cap. Lock engraved with simple foliate scrolls, over standard Springfield markings. Barrel with standard, small sized V/P/{eagle head} proof marks, no cartouche on the counterpane and a clear circle-P inspection in belly of stock behind the checkering. Breech block clearly marked "MODEL / 1873 / Eagle Head / Cross Arrows / US." Narrow receiver, high arch breech, with foliate engraving, additional engraving on barrel band, buttplate, breech block, triggerguard, hammer and breech block release, all higher quality than the latest production officer's models but not as fine as on the second model rifles. Two-click tumbler, smooth single-set trigger. Folding tang mounted rear sight with large oval base, similar in size the early Sharps used sight bases, ladder with calibration lines on rear face of the sight, 1873 pattern rifle rear sight, folding blade/globe front sight.

Includes the original, nickel plated brass tipped wooden cleaning rod with nickel jag on opposite end. Only 477 Officer's Rifles were produced at Springfield circa 1875-1885 with only 125 of these "first type" officer's rifles produced. This is a very crisp, clean example that would be a fine addition to any collection of Trapdoor Springfields.

Condition: Very good to fine. Retains some traces of thinning blue on the barrel, which is mixing with a smooth plum brown patina. Lock with some traces of vivid case color, breech block and hammer with significantly more vivid color. All markings and engraving remain clear and crisp. Mechanically functional, crisp action, fine, bright bore. Stock with scattered bumps, dings and mars, showing some a small area of deeper impact marks around the toe of the butt on the obverse. A lovely example of a scarce, early production officer's rifle.

U.S. Model 1892 Type II Krag Rifle

Lot # 88 (Sale Order: 86 of 370)

.30-40 Krag, 30" barrel, S/N 5214. Blued finish, finger-grooved, straight-gripped, smooth walnut stock. Receiver marked in two lines: "US / 1894. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY 5214." Counterpane with clear, script "JSA / 1895" cartouche, script {circle-P} mark behind triggerguard. Correct M1892 rear sight with stepped side walls, pinned blade front sight, cleaning rod, sling and stacking swivels, no trap in buttplate.

The rifle is accompanied by a letter from Frank Mallory of Springfield Research Service indicating that the gun was initially issued to Private Alfred B. Archer of Company B, 13th US Infantry who served from November 2, 1892 until November 1, 1897. Company B of the 13th US took part in the assault on Fort San Juan on July 1, 1898 during the Spanish-American War. The famous charge up San Juan Hill was part of that action. The rifle subsequently saw service with Company L of the 20th Kansas Volunteer Infantry, who saw service in the Philippines during the Philippine-American War in 1899. The letter does not make it clear if the rifle saw service in Cuba or not. A scarce, early production Krag with some good history.

Condition: Very good. Retains much of the blued finish with fading, wear and loss. Clear markings on the metal. Mechanically functional, good bore is dirty with even light pitting. Stock is cracked and repaired at the wrist with a dowel inserted behind the {circle}-P mark to support the repair. The butt has been sanded and refinished to make the repair less visible. The balance of the stock is un-sanded, with scattered bumps, dings and handling marks.
