WINCHESTER MODEL 12 US TRENCH 12 BORE SHOTGUN

Lot # 429 (Sale Order: 451 of 831)

Serial #996989. This US Trench gun was made in 1946 just after the Second World War ended. They were used after the war for guard duty, then called back to service during the Korean conflict and even issued in Viet Nam. The serial number falls into the late proper range as dictated in the best book written on US Combat Shotguns by Bruce Canfield which is where all of our data was derived. Shotgun features the 20" cyl choked barrel and is stamped on left side of the barrel along with 2 3/4" chamber. It is a take-down model with matching serial numbers. Installed is the proper 4 hole heat shield and bayonet lug with a "W" stamped on left side of lug. The shield has the built in bayonet lug as well as the sling swivel. The right side of the frame has the ordnance bomb and is stamped US . This stamp will also be found on the top of the barrel. The left side of the plain pistol grip stock has the inspector cartouche GHD for Guy Dewey as well as the Ordnance Wheel stamp. As to the original factory metal finish, there are some light handling marks on frame and barrel but gun still retains at least 98% of the original commercial quality finish. In fact, when examining the magazine tube, there is just a couple of small marks which indicates that this shotgun has not even been racked more than a few times and never saw any use. The stock is also in almost new condition with barely a handling mark. The grooved fore-end is a bit darker showing some storage residue but free of dents. The bore and action are crisp as new. Given the near mint condition of this weapon, it is obvious that it saw no use and was probably never issued. Included is a Model 1917 blued bayonet with leather scabbard. Marked "Ordnance/ US " on one side and "1917/W" on the other. As these guns become more desirable each day, they should prove to be a great investment in American military history. *(C&R)

CONFEDERATE CONVERTED 1816 US MUSKET WITH BAYONET

Lot # 445 (Sale Order: 469 of 831)

NSN. When the Civil War broke out, there were thousands of US weapons stored in southern arsenals. Many of these weapons were woefully out of date but necessity being the mother of invention, the Union Manufacturing Company of Richmond, Virginia performed bolster conversions on a number of out of date U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock muskets to percussion at the beginning of the Civil War. These muskets were of 69 caliber with smoothbore barrels. In addition to changing the bolster and breech, this barrel has been shortened to 33 1/2" cut from original 42" length. The stock was shortened just ahead and flush with the rear barrel band. The original lock bears the Harpers Ferry 1836 stamp along with the US eagle. If you look at a copy of the book by Dr. Murphy entitled “CONFEDERATE RIFLES & MUSKETOONS” on pages.709-718, there is an illustration of identical conversion of bolster and breech on page 717. On the left side of the walnut stock is a carved Maltese cross that was used by the 5th Corp of the Union Army so this may be a capture gun. Along with this musket, there is an original Boyle and Gamble bayonet. These were made in Richmond Virginia. This example features the typical cast brass one piece grip, pommel and hilt with serial number 069 but no maker stamp. The blade has a full length fuller and measures 20 1/2" with a total length of 25 3/4". The release spring is broken. The blade shows heavy layer of rust with heavy wear. You can still see the distinctive line on the barrel that is 10 1/2" from muzzle where it was simply press fit to the barrel. The musket itself is in very good condition showing much use and untouched since conversion to percussion. All metal surfaces are a rich brown patina. All legends on lock are razor sharp. The butt plate is marked US. The stock is in like condition. There are numerous dings and impressions but original finish remains with rich color walnut. There is a light crack on left side of stock at breech of barrel. The nipple area is a bit corroded as expected but the hammer is in fine working order with tight spring. The bore is not bad but, of course, there is black powder abrasions. A true Confederate converted and used US 1816 Musket with a rare Confederate bayonet as well. A true piece of Confederate Civil War history. (A)
NSN. When the Civil War broke out, there were thousands of US weapons stored in southern arsenals. Many of these weapons were woefully out of date but necessity being the...more mother of invention, the Union Manufacturing Company of Richmond, Virginia performed bolster conversions on a number of out of date U.S. (A)
