ALLEN & WHEELOCK SIDEHAMMER NAVY REVOLVER

Lot # 525 (Sale Order: 554 of 831)

Made 1858-1861. Even though there are no recorded government orders for this handgun, it is still considered by collectors to be a martial type. This revolver is a .36 bore percussion, six shot single action with an 8" octagon barrel. The cylinder features an elaborate forest scene with rabbit, deer, antlered game, etc. Approximately 750 examples of this standard model were ever manufactured. The left side of the barrel has the Allen & Wheelock dates and Mass. address. This is a crisp and all original rare Navy Model. The cylinder scene is near perfect and crisp. All of the metal is a clean, soft patina with some minor age spotting. The rifling is sharp with just light black powder abrasion. The action indexes and locks up correctly. All of the nipples are original. The two piece walnut grips show high edge wear and a few impressions but still retain original finish and are free of cracks or major chips. A very handsome example. ALLEN & WHEELOCK CENTER HAMMER LIPFIRE ARMY

Lot # 526 (Sale Order: 555 of 831)

his is a second model, chambered for the .44 caliber lipfire cartridge, six shot, single action with a 7 1/2'" barrel. The reason few collectors are aware of this gun is the fact that only about 250 were ever made in the early-1860's before production was halted due to the S&W patent infringement. Another area of confusion is that many consider this a conversion which is untrue as it was made to accept cartridges and pre-dates the Army percussion model. The Allen & Wheelock name and patents are stamped on the left side of the barrel. There is no original finish remaining, instead, this gun is now a mix of gun metal and age freckling. It sports a period set of flared ivory grips with age and stress cracks and slight shrinkage. The rifling is sharp and the action indexes and locks up tight. (A)

Lot # 539 (Sale Order: 568 of 831)

This small frame factory engraved revolver is a Lefaucheux type six shot folding trigger double action revolver in the small 7mm pin fire cartridge. It features a 3 3/4" octagon barrel, open top frame, two piece bone grips with metal pommel. This is probably a guild built gun as there is no maker stamp or patents. There is about 50% original nickel that smoothly blends with gun metal gray with scattered age spotting. Grips are excellent. Cylinder indexes and locks up tight but rebound spring is not working. The rifling is sharp but has some minor black powder erosion. This is the one of the largest caliber and frame size for this type of revolver. (A)
