English silver trophy for a French polo tournament in Cannes in 1913, in the form of a two-handled cup hallmarked Mappin & Webb, London, 1912, registration design Rd.557717, with chased decoration of a polo match, the reverse inscribed WON BY, COMTE L.R. DE GRAMONT, DUC DE SANTONA, C.D. MILLER, STUART SHIPTON, CANNES 1913, height 16.5cm, weight: 300 gms, bowl misaligned and leaning forward Polo was played at Mandelieu on the Cote d'Azur from 1907 and was a favoured place to play polo during the winter season. Tournaments included Prix d'Ouverture, Cannes-Brioni-Vienna Challenge Cup, Prix de la Riviera, Prix di Circle Nautique and Coupe de Beautes Europeennes.

A fine polo trophy for The Pringle Challenge Shield competed for between 1922 and 1939 at the Goriajan Club on the Koomtai Tea Estate, Assam, India, hallmarked Atkins Brothers, Sheffield, 1922, the large shield measuring 45 by 34cm. inscribed THE PRINGLE CHALLENGE SHIELD, GORIAJAN, 1922, with floral decoration and set on an ebonised wooden shield-shaped base with easel support, and set with 18 plaques, mostly bearing full silver hallmarks, each inscribed with details of the annual winning polo team, the plaques for 1933 & 1939 further inscribed DHUNSIRI and NAZIRA CLUB respectively, suggesting the competition was no longer exclusively held at the Goriajan Club, overall 60 by 48cm., good condition, minor scuffs and scratches to ebonised base The Goriajan Club was located in Assam at Sankala Gaon on the Koomtai Tea Estate with polo first played there sometime between 1897 and 1914. The Pringle family was originally from the Carriber Estate in West Lothian, Scotland. Extensive family research including the connections with India tea plantations and the Goriajan Club can be found published on the website www.koi-hai.com.

An interesting item of polo memorabilia being a match ball used in the England v USA Westchester Cup game played at London's Hurlingham Club in June 1921, hand painted inscription reading: INTERNATIONAL POLO, ENGLAND, AMERICA etc., now only partly legible, housed in a modern custom-made display cube, 13cm. square Westchester Cup, a trophy presented by the playing members of the Westchester Polo Club to be played for between American and Hurlingham teams. Officially known as the International Polo Cup, the oldest in the world of polo. Hurlingham Club founded in 1869 by Frank Heathcote as a social club, polo started in 1874. Main tournaments included the Champion Cup, Inter-regimental tournament, Whitney Cup.

A watercolour by Frank Ashley Nelson (American, 1920-2007) of a polo player & pony in match action, signed with initials, acquired from the artist's estate sale, watercolour over traces of pencil on paper, 26 by 28cm., unmounted and unframed, very good condition Frank Ashley Nelson specialised in representational artworks and worked out of Carmel and Monterey in California. During a long career he was represented for over 50 years by the Zantman Art Galleries. Of particular note is his military service. Nelson served combat duty based in England as a B 17 pilot, completing 25 missions. He was awarded two distinguished flying crosses, a purple heart and four air medals. He was discharged as a Captain and after World War Two studied art at the Academy of Art in Chicago, then the Minneapolis Art Institute and the Art Student's League in New York. He was the recipient of numerous awards for his work and some of his finest pieces other than polo are of jazz musicians and horse racing.

A watercolour by Cecil James Hobson (British, 1874-1915) featuring a portrait of the polo player Walter Buckmaster, signed, the player in the saddle and carrying his mallet, the image 31 by 22cm., mounted, framed & glazed, overall 47.5 by 36.5cm., very good Walter Buckmaster (1872-1942) was the first English player to be awarded a 10 goal handicap and is widely considered to have been the finest English polo player before WW1.
