Rare poster advertising a Grand Rural Fete at Seaton Delaval Gardens on Monday 1st September 1862, including Tennis Court Exercises, unframed, 57 by 22cm., in good condition, slight loss to the upper edge, fold lines Seaton Delaval Hall designed by Sir John Vanburgh & completed in 1728 for Admiral George Delaval, now a listed Grade I building owned by the National Trust, which informed the vendor a real tennis court was not built, reasonable to conclude Tennis Court Exercises in 1862 were on a very early grass or hard court. Lord Hastings gave permission for a club to use the grounds at Seaton Delaval Hall and the Seaton Delaval Lawn Tennis Annual Ball in January 1889 in the Colliery School room was attended by 60 couples, claiming to be the only club in the district. Literature: ''Leisure and Recreation in a Victorian Mining Community''.
