American Talking Scale

Lot # 1344 (Sale Order: 203 of 227)      

Circa 1909, manufactured by The United Vending Co, Cleveland, OH. This all-original scale was purchased by a small town General Store operator in rural Virginia. It was o...moreperated for 10 years. The owner then brought it home where it sat in the basement for the next 80 years. His daughter sold it in 1999. The current owner has had it for the last 20 years. The body of the scale is made of ornamental cast iron. The front door depicts a balance scale intertwined with a ribbon reading "American Talking Scale". A cast iron framed blue and white porcelain sign tops the scale reading "5¢ I Speak Your Weight", 6 blue porcelain panels from a speaker vent for weight announcements and gives visual directions for operation. The original internal mechanism is all intact. THERE IS NO RECORD WITH THIS SCALE. Original locks are included, cast iron has no breaks, chips, cracks or repairs, the top blue porcelain direction panel has a chip on the left side, overall stand 77" tall, with marquee 18" x 32". You will never find another one of these in such original as-found condition!

Machine has Too Choos or Joy Mint as the flavors to pick from for one cent. The enameled steel case has a small spot near the top right corner where the finish is missing. Original paper labels are present on inside of case but illegible due to age. White lettering is clear and legible on case. Mechanism untested. See photos.

Manufactured by, Fruit-O-Matic Manufacturing Company, during the early 1950's, in Los Angeles, California. The machine was both a popular and dependable, unique, vending ...moremachine for dispensing, chilled, fresh fruit. The machine features a hermetically sealed refrigeration unit and an attractive fluorescent lighted front display panel. The machine gained popularity when it appeared in the 1949 movie staring, Marlon Brando in "The Men". The Fruit-O-Matic was later promoted by the actress, Jane Mansfield and began appearing on college campuses, such as UCLA and the Fruit-O-Matic even had a location in Times Square, in New York City. This machine appears to be complete. It is in original, as-found condition and believed to be in working condition although untested by auction house. Measures 73" tall, 45" wide, 24" deep and weighs 700 pounds. Has original sales literature.

The item has had meticulous care over the past 140 plus years, not saying it doesn't have a small scratch or nick here or there but not many, especially for its age. It would definitely be the highlight in anyone's home. If you would like to view one of these you would have to visit the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. Antique Parlor Doors w/Ruby Etched Glass

To start with, these incredibly beautiful, rare doors have just been restored (hardware included) by one of the best restorers in the country. The workmanship in bringing...more these to this degree is impeccable. All the hardware is original and detailed to the max. The wood looks to be oak and also in incredible condition for it's age and use. The ruby red glass (no cracks or chips) is so rare (was told at this age, gold was needed to get this color) and vibrant along with detailing of the etching. These doors look wonderful from either side. A once in a lifetime chance to own. Excellent condition. Measures 88.5" tall, 62" wide.
