35.75" swamped octagonal barrel, 46" overall length. The figured walnut fullstock with scalloped borders and staghorn forend cap. The barrel signed in full on the top flat MELCHIOR/FELSELISEN/1678.  The breech struck with a star and engraved with wiggle work.  The lock boldly engraved with strapwork en suite with the pierced wheel cover. The cock of elegant form with baluster arm. The forearm of the stock well carved in relief. The stock is finely inlaid above the patchbox with white staghorn depicting a hound in the Saxon manner heightened with profuse and delicate tendrils of white horn. The original patchbox is decorated with running hound en suite. The inlay between the sidenails depicts a proud stag and doe in a landscape, a perching exotic bird and a prancing lion in white staghorn heightened with green stained horn. The cheek rest is finely inlaid with nobleman's coat of arms in scrimshawed pearl addorsed with two crowned lions rampant atop a finely inlaid floral spray. The butt adorned with a finely inlaid border consisting of delicate horn tendrils framing blossoms. Horn buttplate. Steel triggerguard with finger rests.

Condition: All of the metalwork is fine fine and untouched throughout with minor oxidation to lockplate. The stock is fine with some losses to horn buttplate. Minor marks and several losses to horn around the buttplate. This is a fine Wheelock-sporting rifle with identifiable noble coat of arms and though the inlay is not profuse, the quality is uniformly excellent and tasteful.
