Pair of French Percussion Conversion Pistols by Damemme of St. Lo

Lot # 307 (Sale Order: 303 of 370)

.56 caliber, 7.75" barrels, no S/N. Blued finish, iron mountings, figured wood stocks. Single-shot percussion pistols altered from flint. Locks marked "Dememme" in script over "A St. Lo."  Barrels with gold gilt floral decoration with the carved steel butt caps with extended langets and a heroic bust of Caesar also showing gilt highlights. Locks altered by the brazed bolster method with flint battery screw holes filled and flat percussion hammers added. Stock with raised carved floral motifs surrounding the barrel tangs and forward of the triggerguard tangs, which have raised aprons around them. Old wooden ramrods are included with the pistols; at least one is a replacement due to poor fit, and both may be replacements.

Jean-Jacques Dememme worked in St. Lo, France circa 1740-1751 and his son Michel-Jacques worked circa 1773-1781.

Condition: Good. Metal with minute traces of blue, much of the gold gilt on the barrels and an untouched and evenly oxidized plum brown patina. Some surface roughness and light pitting is present as well. Markings on the locks are fair to good with the location name illegible on one lock and only partly visible on the other. One pistol is mechanically functional, the other needs mechanical attention as the hammer will not hold cock at any position. Both bores are dirty and moderately oxidized. Both stocks with fairly crisp raised carving. The functional pistol has some wood filler on the obverse around one of the barrel pins and a 1" chip of wood missing on the reverse of the grip at the grip cap. The other pistol has a stock with no significant issues. Both stocks show numerous scattered bumps, dings and mars. A lovely pair of French pistols from the mid-18th century that would benefit from a careful cleaning and a little mechanical attention.

Starr Model 1858 Double Action Cartridge Conversion Revolver

Lot # 313 (Sale Order: 309 of 370)

.44 caliber, 6" barrel, S/N 4018. Blued finish, varnished walnut grip. Double-action, 5-shot cartridge conversion revolver. Right side of frame marked in one line: "STARR ARMS Co NEW YORK" and in one line on the left side: "STARR'S PATENT JAN. 15, 1856". Marked with double-crown "U" Germanic proof marks throughout and with a small Prussian style eagle over S on the lower right side of the frame. A screw hole in the bottom of the grip suggests that a lanyard ring was previously attached at this location. An interesting alteration that includes an added cylinder arbor, supporting a newly-made 5-shot cylinder from the time of the alteration. A frame mounted firing pin and new hammer were added as part of the alteration as well. The gun was then reblued. Markings suggest that this might have been done for use by one of the German states, and might have been chambered for the 10.6x25 cartridge used in the M1873 Reichsrevolver. An interesting cartridge alteration of a Starr, and not one of the much more commonly encountered Belgian alterations or Western gunsmith conversions.

Condition: Good as refinished. Retains much of the old applied blue with some lightly scattered pitting, notably on the hammer. Markings remain legible, gun remains mechanically functional with a good bore that shows moderate oxidation. Grips refinished and remain in very good condition with scattered dings and mars.

** Webley Fosberry Target Revolver

Lot # 320 (Sale Order: 315 of 370)

.455 caliber, 7.5" octagonal barrel, S/N 3626. Blued finish, checkered walnut grips. Automatic six-shot, recoil operated, top-break revolver. Barrel rib marked: "P WEBLEY & SON LONDON & BIRMINGHAM", left side of top strap marked "WEBLEY FOSBERY" and left side of frame marked with the Webley "Flying Bullet" logo and "455 CORDITE". The serial number "3626" is on the right side of the frame, with the cylinder and barrel web both numbered with the last three digits "626", and both grips stamped with those numbers on their interiors. A small black sticker with a gold outline and the gold letters "SAFE" is present under the safety lever on the left side of the frame. Birmingham commercial proofs are found throughout. Metford rifled bore, pinned target blade front sight and drift adjustable notched rear sight blade. A lanyard ring is present in the butt.

The unique "automatic" revolver was designed by Lt. Col. George Vincent Fosbery (VC) in the late 1890s, and was similar to the Mauser Zig-Zag revolver. Fosbery took his design to P. Webely & Sons (later Webley & Scott) ca 1896-97, where the minor improvements were made and the gun was introduced at the 1900 Bisley shooting matches, going into full production the following year and remaining in production through 1924. Less than 5,000 of the guns were produced in .455 (six-shot) and .38 Colt ACP (eight-shot) during that time. The revolver is probably most noted for its use in the novel The Maltese Falcon as well as the famous 1941 film of the same name.

**C&R or FFL required

Condition: Very good. Retains some nice blue on the frame with less on the barrel and cylinder, with the exposed metal showing a mostly even plum brown over gray patina. All markings remain clear and legible, mechanically functional, although the safety seems to need some attention to operate consistently. Fine, bright bore with Metford polygonal rifling. Grips solid with some light to moderate wear. Overall a solid and attractive example of a scarce Webley "automatic" revolver that is not found for sale very often.
