** Engraved Double-Barrel Hammer Shotgun by G.L. Rasch

Lot # 260 (Sale Order: 256 of 370)

12 gauge, 30" Nitro proofed Damascus barrels, no S/N. Horn takedown lever, horn and steel trigger guard, nicely figured checkered walnut stock and forearm, checkered butt with checkered steel heel and toe plates, back action locks with dragon head hammers, beautifully relief engraved with floral and game scenes and gold inlaid accents.

Georg Ludwig Martin Rasch (1792-1867) founded "G.L. Rasch-Braunschweig" in the second quarter of the 19th century.  A well-respected craftsman, he served as head of the Brunswick gunmaker's guild from 1843-1845.  The quality and skill of his work caught the attention of the Ducal family and was later appointed royal gunmaker.  Rash made fine arms for several members of the Brunswick royal family.

While the firm manufactured most of its own pieces, later examples show markings of Liege, Suhl, and other popular areas of gun making.  This piece was likely made under the ownership of Georg's son, Friederich Martin Ferdinand.  Frederich's son Ferdinand was the head of the shop at this time, and as such was likely the maker or assembler of this piece.

**C&R or FFL required

Condition: This gun is a functional display of craftsmanship and art.  It is in excellent condition with excellent bores and retains most of the original finish. High quality, high condition, this gun has it all.

German Swivel Breech Flintlock Stalking Gun by Ferdinand Eckart

Lot # 264 (Sale Order: 260 of 370)

.53 caliber, 25.4375" octagonal-to-round barrels, no S/N. Browned finish, sterling silver mounts and furniture, iron lock, figured wood stock. 40" overall length swivel breech flintlock "smooth rifle" with single flint lock. Barrels with gold lined touchholes and inlaid flowing silver foliate motif decorations as well as the name FERDINAND ECKART IN BAMBERG inlaid on the top ribs, with the barrels numbered 1 and 2 at the breeches. Flint lock with rounded swan neck cock. Breeches with rounded, waterproof, fenced iron pans and roller frizzes. Face of triggerguard functions as the barrel release, pulling back on the guard allows the barrels to rotate. All furniture and mountings of silver, with a Diamond-A touch or maker's mark on all pieces. Silver mountings include the buttplate, toe plate, triggerguard, wrist escutcheon, three barrel screw escutcheons and nose cap, side plate, two ramrod thimbles, entry pipe and front sight blades. Wooden ramrod with sliver covered tip appears to be original to the rifle. Sling swivel in toe of stock with swivel staple in forend between the middle and upper mounting screws. Stock with raised cheek rest. Stock carved with raised floral patterns surrounding the tang and continuing down the wrist and around the bottom of the cheek rest to the reverse of the butt. Raised carved moldings surround the lock with more floral and vine motifs surrounding the decorative screw escutcheons in the forend.

Ferdinand Eckart (1731-1799) worked in Bamberg, Bavaria becoming a master gunsmith in 1763. He married Katharina, daughter of Wolfgan Schirmer (1704-1772), another Bamberg gunsmith. The couple had four children, Anton (1766-1807), Joseph (1770-1743), Ferdinand (1772-1830s) and Ernst (1774-1842), all of whom became gun makers as well. As this gun appears to date from the turn of the 19th century it could be the work of either father Ferdinand or son Ferdinand. A really gorgeous and well made swivel breech stalking gun in wonderful condition.

Condition: Fine. Retains some of the original browned finish with scattered surface oxidation and some minor roughness scattered here and there. Silver inlays in barrel are deeply tarnished, silver mounts with a dull pewter patina. Mechanically functional lock, barrel swivel system fully functional and locks into place tightly. Bores in very good condition with some scattered light oxidation. Stock crisp with scattered bumps and dings but no repairs or structural issues.

Italian Elliptical Bore Flintlock Blunderbuss With Folding Stock

Lot # 266 (Sale Order: 262 of 370)

1.6"x1.1" smooth elliptical bore, 20.25" octagonal-to-round barrel with baluster turned rings at the transition, no S/N. Bright finish with gold Damascene decorations, brass furniture, figured walnut stock. 32.25" in overall length with a 8.25" folding butt. Tapered octagonal portion of barrel decorated with engraved geometric panels with an applied silver colored classical bust on the top flat, with similar applied busts on the chiseled brass side plate, triggerguard, buttplate tang and bottom of buttplate. 7" long steel belt hook on reverse, which includes a lanyard loop in the mount for sling carry as well. 5.5" banana shaped beveled steel lock with engraved gold Damascene decorative panels. Lock with removable rounded and fenced, unbridled iron pan, and flat beveled swan-neck cock which is engraved and decorated en-suite. Pan and steel engraved with matching motifs as well. Convex, un-slotted hammer screw with matching classical bust decorative motif as found throughout the blunderbuss. Lock remains in original flint. Figured stock with contrasting tip, with raised carved decorative apron around the trapezoidal tang and with carved moldings around the rear of the lock mortise and counterpane. Carved moldings continue around the urn-shaped triggerguard finial and ramrod entry pipe with incised lines along the lower edge of the stock, outlining the ramrod channel. Includes a horn tipped wood ramrod retained by a single brass thimble and the entry pipe appears to be an old replacement. A lovely Italian blunderbuss with lovely lines and a pleasing form.

Condition: Good to very good. Metal with a thinly oxidized brown patina that could be cleaned, as the metal was likely cleaned to bright in the European fashion in the past. Metal and engraving remain crisp with gold damascene dulled. Some scattered surface oxidation and minor roughness is present on the steel and iron. Most of the brass furniture with a dark, uncleaned patina, with the triggerguad having a dull gold color indicative of an old cleaning. Lock mechanically functional and in original flint. Bore very good with scattered light oxidation. Folding butt mechanically functional, although the internal mechanism may be of more recent vintage or restored. Butt exhibits some wiggle when extended and locked in place. Wood very good, with nice lines and crisp carving. Stock shows some scattered bumps, dings and mars, as well as some old wood filler in several locations. A dime-sized section of filler is present at the lower obverse of the butt where it meets the locking collar, with additional filler along the edges of the butt where it meets the buttplate, filling old chips in this area. Otherwise the stock remains solid and free of repairs.

English Flintlock Blunderbuss by Hudson with Snap Bayonet

Lot # 267 (Sale Order: 263 of 370)

1.25" flared canon muzzle, nominally .75" bore, 14.5" three-stage wedge-retained brass barrel with baluster turned rings at transitions, no S/N. Brass barrel and furniture, iron lock, walnut stock. 5.75" lock with integral, rounded, fenced and bridled pan and rounded swan-neck cock. Lock marked HUDSON forward of cock and under pan. Barrel with London commercial proof marks and engraved beaded band at breech. 12" snap bayonet mounted on top of barrel. 5.625" flat, two-screw brass side plate with simple engraving, triggergard with simple engraved acorn finial, similar simple patterns engraved on the brass buttplate tang as well. Brass wrist escutcheon is not engraved with initials or coat of arms. Simple raised apron carved around the breech plug tang. Wood ramrod with brass disc at tip, measures only 12" and is likely an old, too short for service, replacement.

Several gunmakers with the surname "Hudson" are listed in Blackmore who worked during the period that this gun was likely produced, circa 3rd-4th quarter of the 18th century, but the most likely maker appears to be Thomas Hudson (2), son of Thomas Hudson (1), who was active in London 1769-1782.

Condition: Good. The brass has a lovely mellow patina throughout. Lock shows some light pitting and erosion, but remains in original flint and is fully functional. Bore is very good with scattered oxidation. Snap bayonet remains functional but the spring is weak and the bayonet must be manually locked in place as spring tension will not fully extend it. Stock worn with numerous repaired cracks in the forend, running diagonally from the front of the lock mortise and  counterpane to the entry pipe, traveling through the rear barrel wedge. Stock with numerous scattered scuffs, dings and surface mars as well.

.58 caliber, 14.5" key-retained octagonal-to-round barrel, no S/N. Color case hardened lock and tang, gun metal barrel and brass furniture. The nominally.58 caliber bore flares to a 1.25" canon muzzle with baluster turned rings. 5" flat, stepped lock marked RICHARDSON, with integral rounded, bridled and fenced waterproof iron pan and roller frizzen. Continental Flintlock Musket

Lot # 270 (Sale Order: 266 of 370)

.70 caliber, 42" barrel secured by three flat bands with springs, no S/N. Bright finish, European walnut stock. Unmarked externally with the exception of the assembly number 8 throughout, and a small inspection mark at the breech that appears to be a deeply struck SP. Lock remains in original flint configuration with matching assembly marks on both external and internal parts, barrel in original flint as well. No traditionally recognizable proofs are present on top or under the barrel. The musket appears to be Germanic copy of a French pattern musket, based upon the French M1822 from the second quarter of the 19th century. Retains the socket bayonet stud on top of barrel, 1.125" from the muzzle, the full-length button head ramrod with threads at end and both sling swivels.

Some very minor arms of light pinpricking are present, as well as some lightly scattered surface oxidation. Mechanically functional, moderately oxidized bore with light even pitting. Stock lightly cleaned with crisp edges and lines, showing some scattered bumps, dings and minor mars. There is some minor slivering around the triggergaurd tang that appears to be from poor fitting and a small chip out behind the breech plug tang.
